Существительные, употребляющиеся только в единственном числе.
1. Неисчисляемые существительные (вещественные, отвлеченные), как и в русском языке используются только в форме единственного числа:
gold (золото)
silver (серебро)
oil (масло)
music (музыка)
sugar (сахар)
iron (железо)
love (любовь)
friendship (дружба)
Love is blind. - Любовь слепа.
Strike while the iron is hot. - Куй железо, пока горячо.
2. Некоторые существительные в английском языке используются только в форме единственного числа:
luggage (багаж)
advice (совет)
information (сведения)
furniture (мебель)
scenery (пейзаж)
progress (успех)
knowledge (знание)
We have received no information. - Мы не получили никаких сведений.
Knowledge is power. - Знание - сила.

3. Некоторые существительные в английском языке хоть и оканчиваются на –s, но, тем не менее, имеют форму единственного числа:

rickets (рахит)
billiards (бильярд)
works (заводы)
barracks (бараки)
Mathematics is his favorite subject. - Математика – его любимый предмет.
No news is good news. - Отсутствие новостей – хорошая новость.
What is the news? - Какие новости?
4. Слова money и hair в английском языке, в отличие от русского, употребляются только в единственном числе:
Her hair is dark. - У нее темные волосы.
This money belongs to him. - Эти деньги принадлежат ему.
Когда мы хотим сказать "волоски", то используем существительное во множественном числе:
There are two hairs in my soup. - В моем супе 2 волоска.
There is a hair in my soup.
5. Существительное fruit фрукты употребляется в единственном числе:
Fruit is cheap in summer. - Фрукты дешевы летом.
We have bought some fruit. - Мы купили фруктов.
Но если мы говорим о различных видах фруктов, то употребляем множественное число fruits:
On the table there are apples, plums and other fruits.
